The Evolution of Methanol Specifications: Adapting to Changing Market Dynamics

The methanol market has witnessed a significant evolution in recent years, with the development of large-scale plants in remote areas, the necessity to transport methanol over the ocean in dedicated vessels, and increasing swapped quantities. These factors prompted the International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association (IMPCA) to reevaluate the existing specifications for methanol.
Traditionally, consumers relied on the well-known ASTM D 1152 specification. However, this specification was based on the local American situation, where transportation primarily involved rail or road tank cars and barges over freshwater rivers. Attention had not been given to potential sea water contamination, nor did it address the impact of new technologies, applications, and regulations such as ISO 9000. As a result, there was a need for more detailed specifications to accommodate these changing dynamics.

Forging Quality Standards: The Pioneering Journey of IMPCA’s Technical Committee

In 1992, IMPCA took action by establishing a Technical Committee comprising representatives from both manufacturers and end-users. They were assisted by a chemical engineer from an independent, well-known surveyor company with global operations. The Committee embarked on an extensive data collection effort, gathering information from producers, traders, transporters, and end-users. The objective was to develop a specification that could be met and accepted by major methanol producers worldwide while considering the requirements of downstream applications.

The Committee’s approach aimed to avoid creating “second-grade” methanol or imposing limits that could unduly influence production or competition. To achieve this, the conclusions reached were compared with the existing ASTM D 1152 specification, incorporating as many ASTM test methods as possible. When necessary, new test methods were devised under the IMPCA nomination (e.g., IMPCA 001, 002, 003, 004).

Enhanced Approach

Developing a comprehensive specification that balances industry requirements with consumer demands.

Industry Impact

The IMPCA specification is widely adopted, reflecting its value in meeting diverse industry needs.

Driving Industry Standards

IMPCA’s Flexible Specifications Evolve with Market Needs

The primary goal was to strike a balance between producers and traders who desired a specification as broad as possible and consumers who sought a specification as stringent as possible. It is important to note that the IMPCA specification is not intended to be an industry-wide standard but rather a reference specification. Any specific requirements must be addressed through contractual agreements between consumers and suppliers.

Nowadays, the Technical committee remains committed to serving its members. It closely monitors industry developments as limits and methods evolve, driven by advancements in equipment and technologies. Additionally, the committee keeps track of updates from ASTM, informing members about the latest reviews (which can even be consulted on www.astm.org).

Today, it is gratifying to see that methanol is being sold under the IMPCA Reference Specifications in many parts of the world. This reflects the industry’s recognition of the value provided by these specifications in meeting the diverse needs of producers, traders, and consumers alike.
